The West Point Inn

Before we delve into the hike itself, let's briefly explore the history of the West Point Inn. Perched atop the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, the West Point Inn was first established in 1904. Originally a resort serving as a stopover for visitors arriving via the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway, it now serves as an enchanting, rustic inn offering respite for hikers and a glimpse into the past. The inn has retained its charm, featuring cozy rooms and warm hospitality. The West Point Inn is only accessible by foot or bicycle.

The Pancake Hike

The West Point Inn Pancake Hike begins at the Panoramic Highway Trailhead, which is easily accessible by car or public transport from San Francisco. As you set foot on the trail, you'll be greeted by the towering presence of ancient redwood trees, their canopies creating a soothing shade that invites you deeper into the woods. The trail meanders through the lush forest and provides sweeping views of the Marin Headlands, Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Bridge and city skyline.

The moderate, 3-mile hike is a delightful blend of gradual ascents and descents, allowing you to savor the beautiful views without too much strain. The path is well-marked, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels, though it is important to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring sufficient water.

*Note: There are a few different trailheads you can use to get to West Point Inn, whether you’re interested in a longer or shorter hike.

The trail is a symphony of natural beauty

Reaching the Inn

As you approach the West Point Inn after the hike, the smell of freshly made pancakes wafts through the air, drawing you closer to your destination. The fluffy pancakes, cooked to perfection, are served with topping choices of blueberries, classic maple syrup with butter or chocolate chips. Paired with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, the breakfast provides a delightful reward for your efforts on the trail.

In case you or your company have a tendancy of getting hangry, keep in mind that it most likely will be busy with a line. If you can, I suggest having someone wait in line while another person looks for a spot to sit.

I opted for the side of sausage and shared a side of cantaloupe as well

Pancake breakfasts are from 9am to 1pm and are run by volunteers. Volunteers get to spend the night before the event at West Point Inn for free and also receive dinner that night and breakfast and lunch the next day. If you’re interested in signing up to volunteer, check out their website for details.
